UNICEF NZ Executive Director, Dennis McKinlay, is visiting the Solomon Islands next week to see for himself the impact of UNICEF’s work.
“I am very much looking forward to returning to the Solomon Islands on Tuesday to see further progress on our reconstruction work since my last visit in September 2008.
When I was there last year I was so impressed with the scale of the project and the logistical challenges of the work being spread over so many small Islands. I was also blown away by the sheer number of communities who had been affected by the 2007 earthquake and ensuing tsunami.
Working across so many Islands makes this reconstruction project very difficult with supplies having to be flown and boated over large distances.
While I am there I will also be looking at progress on malaria reduction and visiting the child friendly schools that we are funding.
Updates will start on Wednesday 22 July and I welcome your feedback and comments during my trip!”
