Making a difference from the other side of the world
In recent times, Sri Lanka has made its mark on the globe for various reasons: from the positives of playing great cricket to the negatives of being in a state of conflict for several years.
As Sri Lankans living overseas, we are somewhat detached from the realities of life back home. We don’t experience, on a day-to-day basis, what it is like to live in the nation that we most closely identify with as being our homeland. Being on the other side of the world, there is also little we can do to directly support our country.
UNICEF had set up a Sri Lanka Fund that people could donate to online. While there was some fundraising in place in the community to support this effort, more could be done. That’s when a group of friends decided to step in and organise a street appeal, with UNICEF’s help, to raise funds for the war-affected children of Sri Lanka. The street appeal will be held on Thursday, 24th September at various places all around the Wellington area.
Children are our most-prized treasures – the future of Sri Lanka lies in their hands. With your support, they will have a chance at rebuilding their lives and going forward. So when walking along the street, if you see a UNICEF collector on Thursday the 24th, we encourage you to give generously towards this worthy cause. Help us make a difference from this side of the world!
