Amber Peebles: Give life, give nutritious milk this holiday

On the tenth day of Christmas, my true love sent to me: nutritious milk!

We’re counting down to Christmas with the 12 Days of UNICEF where UNICEF ambassadors and champions post daily blog entries about the difference UNICEF Inspired Gifts are making in the lives of many children around the world.

As Kiwis we are more than aware that milk is essential for growing and developing children.

© UNICEF/ HQ08-0429/Grum TegeneNurse Jerry at the Good Shepherd Hospital in Swaziland shared that their region (Lubombo) is being hard hit by drought and poverty, but therapeutic feeding is making a difference. She said, “Since the introduction of therapeutic feeding, we have experienced a decline in the loss of children’s lives.”

Amber PeeblesTemahlubi is one of several children who got admitted to Good Shepherd Hospital for acute malnutrition. Seven months later, she is now a happy, healthy baby who regards the nurses as her own parents and friends. Her bed is next to the nurses’ room so when she needs her therapeutic milk at night, she taps the nurses’ window.

In situations where mothers are unable to breastfeed, therapeutic milk provides children with the life-saving nourishment they so desperately need. Right now, you can provide two sachets of the Life-Saving ‘magic’ milk for only $17.
